Latex Condoms
Condom use is one of the best ways to prevent the spread of STIs and to avoid pregnancy. They are 97% effective against pregnancy if used correctly. Want to make sure you’re using the condom correctly? Follow these steps every time you use one:
1. Store your condoms properly. The best place to store them is in a cool, dry place, like a drawer or a box. Don’t store in direct sunlight, and avoid storing in a wallet or somewhere similar for more than 24 hours.
2. Check the expiration date. Every package will have one, and it’s important that you don’t use condoms that are past their expiration.
3. Open the package carefully. Don’t use teeth or scissors, as this can damage the condom inside.
4. Wait for the penis to be erect. But be sure not to have genital-to-genital contact before the condom is on.
5. Squeeze air from the tip. This gives extra room at the tip of the condom to collect semen. Also, if there is an air bubble at the tip, and pressure from thrusting can cause it to break.
6. Unroll onto erect penis. If the man is uncircumcised, be sure to pull back the foreskin first. Make sure to roll to the base of the penis.
7. Don’t forget to leave space at the end. At least a half an inch!
8. Hold the base of the penis once ejaculation occurs. The penis will become softer after ejaculation, and if you don’t hold the condom, it could slip off, spilling semen.
9. Remove and throw away. Take care not to spill the semen inside.
10. Only use each condom once! Two condoms do NOT offer twice the protection!
We offer a wide-variety of condoms in the SHPRC. Here are some you might find when you come. Be sure to visit often, because we are constantly changing our inventory!

Polyurethane Condoms
These condoms are made of polyurethane, a type of plastic, and are perfect for those with latex allergies. They are just as effective in terms of protecting against pregnancy and infection, and have several advantages to latex condoms. Polyurethane is very strong, so the condom can be made thinner, which gives the one wearing it more sensation. They are not as sensitive to heat and UV rays, so they have less strict storage requirements than latex condoms, and have a longer shelf-life. They are also safe to use with any kind of lubricant, including oil-based, so there are no worries about the condom breaking because of the lube!
However, few disadvantages are that they are less elastic than latex, which can potentially cause more breakage, and are a little more expensive. If you are interested in trying out polyurethane condoms, look for Durex Avanti and let us know if you have any questions!
Female Condom
The female condom is a pouch made of polyurethane, a type of plastic, with a flexible ring at each end. The ring at the closed end holds the female condom in the vagina. The ring at the open end stays outside the vaginal opening. Female condoms prevent sperm from entering the vagina by acting as a physical barrier.
There are several very important benefits to using a female condom. Most importantly, a woman can take control of her sexual health by ensuring that her sexual encounters are as safe as possible. The female condom can be inserted up to eight hours before intercourse, which is wonderful for individuals who feel that stopping to put on a condom ruins the mood. Because part of the condom stays outside the vagina, it allows less skin contact because the vulva is covered much more than if a male condom or no condom was used. The female condom is roomier than a male condom, and some guys will enjoy the extra space. A similar design perk is that the outer ring can stimulate the clitoris and labia, which some women will find pleasurable. Again, it is made of polyurethane and has all the benefits of a male polyurethane condom.
Some disadvantages to consider include irritation of the vagina or vulva from the inner or outer rings. Care needs to be taken to make sure the outer ring does not slip into the vagina during intercourse so that bodily fluids are not exchanged. In order to prevent the condom from twisting inside the vagina, care needs to be taken when inserting it (it is inserted into the vagina like a tampon without an applicator) and generous amounts of lubrication are needed so that the penis does not cling to the sides of the condom and twist it. Female condoms can also be used for anal sex, but be careful, because the condom is not as long as the rectum and it is important not to push the inner ring inside. The female condom has tremendous possibility for benefiting women’s health all over the world: check out our blogs to see the current work being done to improve this already great product!
Dental Dam

These squares of latex are a safer sex barrier method to be used during cunnilingus (oral contact with female genitals) and analingus (oral/anal contact) and completely prevent skin-to-skin contact when used properly. A dental dam is placed against the partner’s genitals with lube on the receiving side, and oral sex proceeds as normal. One partner or the other will want to hold the dam, because it tends to slide around when wet! If you don’t want to spend the money on a new dental dam each time, there are several alternative options. You can cut apart a latex (or polyurethane, if you have latex allergies) glove of condom to use instead of a dental dam. If all these things seem too small for your taste, you can tear off a sheet of non-microwavable plastic wrap, as microwavable will have tiny holes that can leak body fluids. As always, feel free to ask our counselors any questions about dental dams or anything else!
Personal Lubricant

Lube is probably the most underrated sex product around. Knowing how to compliment your sexual activity with the right lube can do wonders for your sex life! Lube’s main purpose is to eliminate friction between moving body parts, and because of that can heighten the pleasure and increase the safety of manual, oral, vaginal, and anal sex!
There are a few important things to know about to lube. Most importantly, lubricant is either oil-based, water-based, or silicon-based, and the three are used very differently. Oil-based can NEVER be used in conjunction with latex. Using oil-based lube, such as massage oil, petroleum jelly, lotion, or even whipped cream and chocolate syrup, can diminish the strength of latex by 70% within the first thirty seconds. However, oil-based lube is great to use as massage oil, or if you have decided not to use a condom. Some people prefer this because is stays slick throughout use. Water-based lube is compatible with condoms, dental dams, and sex toys, so you never have to worry about it weakening the condoms. One drawback is that the water in it can dry out, so it can become sticky after prolonged use. However, adding water or saliva can always reactivate it. Lastly, silicon-based lube is also compatible with anything you can think to use it with. It doesn’t dry out, so a lot of people prefer this type of lubricant. Another advantage is that it does not wash off in water, so if you’re planning to have sex in the water, like the shower or hot tub, you won’t have to worry about friction. We also stock lots of different flavored lubes, which are ideal for oral sex!
Using generous amounts of lubricant (other than oil-based) can help increase the effectiveness of condoms by reducing friction, which can tear condoms. It also increases pleasure for all people involved. With condom use, simply put a few drops on the inside of the condom, as well as generous amounts on the outside, for greatly increased sensation. It is also used with dental dams on the side that is touching the person receiving oral sex. It is especially important to use lots of lube during anal sex to avoid damaging delicate anal tissues.
Some people think that if you are really turned on you shouldn’t need lube because your body should produce enough of its own lubricant, but this is not the case. There are many factors that influence how much wetness a person’s body produces, and one should not feel pressured to become “wet” enough on their own. A single bottle of lube is one of your greatest allies to extremely pleasurable sex!
Massage Oil

What better way to set the mood than with some sensual massage? Naturally fragranced and skin-soothing, this massage oil is great for all over the body. Just remember: never use massage oil with latex! Oil-based products can degrade the strength of latex by 70% in just thirty seconds. Other than that, feel free to use liberally! Or, if you have decided to use polyurethane condoms, set no boundaries! Polyurethane is completely safe to use with massage oil and all other oil-based products.
Vibrators
As of spring 2008, we now carry an exciting new addition to our inventory: vibrators! At only four inches long, the Pearl Drop Vibrator is small and discrete, battery operated, and easy to operate. It is made of hard plastic, which means that it’s easy to clean and transmits vibrations very well, and it’s water-proof! A vibrator can bring intense pleasure to the clitoris, the vulva, outer vagina, the penis’ head and shaft, the scrotum, perineum (the area between the frontal genitals and the anus) and the anus, but can also be used anywhere it feels good! The vibrator can be used on you, your partner, or both! Be creative! The possibilities with even this small toy are endless: try it in different positions, with different pressures and strokes, internally or externally, during intercourse, or anything else you can come up with. Just remember, if a vibrator is being used by more than one person observe safer sex practices and wrap it up! A finger cot is the perfect size for this cute vibrator.
Cock Rings

Another exciting new addition to our inventory is nitrile cock rings! This set of three rings is made of nitrile, a synthetic latex substitute and comes in three different sizes, so you can feel free to experiment with what feels right. Cock rings can be very pleasurable, but before you use them you must make sure you know how to use them correctly to avoid injury. To put a ring on, start with a flaccid penis and tuck the testicles, one at a time, through the ring, followed by the penis. Though this is the traditional way to wear one, some men will prefer to only wear it around the penis. The purpose of a cock ring is to restrict blood flow out of the penis, resulting in pleasurable tightness and pressure, with the goal of making an erection firmer and longer-lasting. Some tips for comfort: trim the pubic hair around the base of the penis and scrotum to avoid it getting caught in the ring, and keep some lube handy to help remove the ring.
A cock ring should be worn for a maximum of 20 minutes, and should be taken off immediately if any discomfort arises. We recommend wearing it for short periods of time while you are growing accustomed to how it works with your body. You should also keep a pair of safety scissors nearby just in case you need to remove it in a rush. If you have a medical condition or if any unusual body changes arise, see your doctor before continuing using the ring.
